Short term memory loss is very normal and common to old age. There are lots of other causes of short term memory loss.

Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of memory loss at old age. People who has someone in the family with Alzheimer’s understands that this cause of short term memory loss is something not to be taken lightly. Slowly this disease makes the person cripple.
Blood Sugar
Low blood sugar can cause the brain to function not normallly, it leads to get sleepy and groggy and hence become one of the causes of short term memory loss. This is why doctors often recommend that patients who want to improve their memory have six small meals in a day as opposed to three large ones so as to keep blood sugar levels steady.
Hormonal
With the aging process, hormonal imbalance is a cause of short term memory loss. When menopause sets in and estrogen level goes down, people start to loss memory. But, now a days, hormone replacement therapies and other such treatment have become common today, This is one of the causes of memory loss.
Depression and Drinking
Depression can contribute to short term memory loss. Depressed people especially those who are taking antidepressant medication cannot remember things often, because of the side effects of the drugs. Besides the medicine, recreational drug abuse and excessive alcohol consumption can also be the causes of short term memory loss.
