Memory Loss

Did you know that there are memory loss causes that you can avoid with ease and a little forward thinking?

As people age, losing some function is completely normal. Your body becomes weaker and more temperamental after years of heavy use. Joints may creak and muscles slacken. Your brain also weakens with age and memory loss can become apparent. However, just because something is normal does not make it inevitable. Plenty of older people have strong and thriving bodies, because they actively work to build and develop that strength. It is harder to do than with a younger body, but it is always worth the effort. You can build your brain muscle in this same way. Here you will determine some of the causes of memory loss, as well as five things you can do to keep your brain active.

1. Diet and Exercise

Whenever health is on the table, no discussion is complete without taking a closer look at diet and exercise. Your entire body is fed by what you consume. What most people fail to realize is that your brain can't function without proper nutrients and oxygen flow either. Moving your body not only builds strength and muscle mass, but feeds the brain, awakening stagnant areas and reducing memory loss. When it comes to food, the old wives' tale about fish being a brain food is truer than you might have thought. B vitamins and Omega-3 acids can contribute to brain function.

2. Drugs and Alcohol

It's not rocket science to figure out that people who want a healthy lifestyle tend to stay away from both drugs and alcohol. What isn't quite as apparent is the specific effect that these choices can have on memory and brain function. Alcohol has a cumulative effect on the brain. While under the immediate effects, short term memory is suppressed. With continual use, these pathways can become permanently damaged and it is one of the memory loss causes that can devastate entire families. In addition, critical nutrients can be blocked by alcohol and drugs.

3. Work That Muscle

Wait, didn't we already talk about exercise? Unlike physical exercise, which increases oxygen flow to your brain, this category deals with mental exercises. If you aren't working your brain, it will stop working for you. People who stimulate their brain as they age are shown to live longer and more fulfilling lives. This can be as simple as doing crossword puzzles or taking a class. Keep yourself mentally challenged and alert and this is one of the memory loss causes that you will successfully avoid.

4. Mood

How you feel really can contribute to how you think. Depression and anxiety have both been linked to the onset and exacerbation of memory loss. Dealing with these mental issues can help to improve your memory. It makes sense that directing worry and stress can take away from your ability to work at your brain's best. Free up those resources and other memory tricks and techniques become much more effective.

5. Build New Pathways

There are several physical causes for memory loss. Diseases such as Parkinson's, for example, can have significant memory consequences as a common side effect. Tumors, cancer and brain trauma can also lead to losing memory function. However, as an amazing organ, the brain has the ability to adapt and adjust to these situations. If your condition isn't chronic and ongoing, there is a good chance that you can build new memory pathways, decreasing memory loss. Of course there are many other memory loss causes - but each of these are directly in your control... so you are a major influence upon how well you live out your mental capability throughout your life.

Why am I having memory loss?
In the past year I have been having blocks of times that I cannot remember. Today, I woke up at 9 am and it's 10 pm now and I cannot remember what I did today. I don't know if I drove today or met with a friend or cooked or cleaned. I just know that I'm on the computer.

Can I still be suffering memory loss from taking prescription lithium?
I was prescribed lithium little more than a year ago and stopped taking it about three months after being initially prescribed due to a misdiagnosis by a doctor. Over the past year now I have holes in my short term memory and forget things much more easily. I have depression but stopped taking medication for that about a year ago simply because I felt better. I already know that just from taking it period memory loss is one of the side effects. But it has been going on two years now and my memory is getting worse as time goes on. It is starting to scare me and cause problems in my relationship.
