Study recommends vegetarianism... sort of?

I thought it was interesting that this article describes a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet, but never actually comes out and says the "V" word. Avoidance of being typecast?... Flexitarian agenda? (okay, I'm joking about that one)... or just trying not to scare people with the "You can never eat a burger again" tactc? What do you think? Why would someone recommend eating a vegetarian diet and not call it a vegetarian diet. The actual DASH diet does allow for a small amount of meat, but these people did not actually follow DASH, the study just followed eating habits over the years. I am not asking you to cut out meat, and I know that most of these women ate meat. What I'm pointing out in particular is the part where it states to eat plant-based proteins over meat. To me, that is referencing that meat (in high quantities... like most Americans eat) is not good for people wanting to avoid heart disease. CLARIFICATION: I know the DASH recommends limited amounts of meat, but the article (which is not actually DASH) is suggesting plant protein over meat. To me, the logical jump is toward lacto-ovo from there, but maybe I'm reading too much into it. Great answers so far. It's usually better for me to tell someone I don't eat meat than to tell them I'm a vegetarian, they don't seem to shriek in horror when you put it that way. wahoo: Good point, the first thing many people think of when trying to help their heart health (say that 3x fast) is diet. Most people don't even consider the incredible benefits of exercise. I think it's really a combo of the two that does the trick. I brought my cholesterol down about 100 points just by eating good and getting off my a**. I'll also say that I'm not trying to say that a meat-inclusive diet is unhealthy. Any diet can be healthy, and any diet can be unhealthy. But the way the majority of people eat is a little overboard (i.e. obesity rates and heart disease rates). Chef Bette: I've read a lot on the Ornish studies, very interesting stuff. It was one of the first things I came across when I found out my cholesterol was high. While I did follow Ornish's plan, I did become a vegetarian and got the results I wanted. Oops...
