Probably silly cat questions?
I've never ever had a cat in my life. I've always had dogs, but would like a cat, and am in the process of swaying my dad into getting me one. Anyway, I just had some probably stupid questions to ask cat owners out there about cat and kitten care in general. Probably the dumbest is about cats and litter trays- Do they use them out of instinct, or do you have to train them like you would house train a dog? Again, never had a cat, ever, and I always just presumed that they knew to use the litter trays, clever little things. Is that thought totally insane, or is it true? If the cat is around fish tanks from the time it comes home, will it still try to eat them when it's older, or will it ignore them? I have several tanks, and some of them have paw sized openings in the tank lids. If that's a problem, I'll close in the gaps. How often does a cat need feeding? Once a day? Twice a day? All day? I won't be allowing the cat to roam, because it's one thing I cannot stand, but I would like to take the cat out in the yard for short on leash plays. How young can a kitten be introduced to a harness? Is it really difficult to train a cat to be on one? Finally, at night, will a cat tolerate being caged, like a dog would? I'm not a huge fan of sharing my bed with animals because I move around a lot and am always scared I'll crush something. If not, will it sleep in a bed I give it, or will it stay on my bed? Again, I apologise for seeming like an idiot, and I plan on doing a ton more research before getting a kitten. But I needed to start, and thought Answers was a good place for it. Thanks in advance for any help!! I will definately be spaying/neutering-If you're not gonna use it, lose it. I'll also be adpoting a kitten from a Cat Refuge/Vet-We have several places around here who get kittens dumped on their doorsteps by idiot owners who let their pets run wild and refuse to sterilise them. I think that I will look for the cats personality and decide exactly what the limits are- The most contact I've had with cats is looking after a few through dog sitting, and they were pretty wary of strangers. Most likely, the cat will be sleeping in my room, so I will probably give in and let it sleep on my bed, dispite my strange hang ups. I'm disgustingly soft when it comes to my animals. One last thing... Out of curiosity, how would you go about introducing a cat to a couple of dogs who have no experience with them? The dogs live outside, where the cat won't be, but it would probably be a good idea to introduce them if the dogs did need to live inside for some reason.

Does anyone have any real life suggestions to why a kitten bites, not just the standard cookie cutter answers.?
I guess you can say that I am fed up with the cookie cutter advice that permeates the web about cat and kitten care. I need some real people with real experiences and solutions. I have a legitimate problem and everyone wants to just box it up into whatever category fits their answer instead of looking at the actual details of the actual problem. I have the list of "most Common answers, and why they don't work for my situation. Please if you know of a different reason and solution, I'm all ears. I'm at wits end. Kitten Bites Me. Okay, so don?t play rough with it. . . .I DON?T play rough with it. And beside I don?t play with him with my hands as a toy. Okay, well feed it . . . the kitten is FED and FULL it?s NOT HUNGRY. Okay, well give it chew toys . . . it HAS chew toys, it CHOOSES to CHEW on ME! Okay, well when it bites you take your hand away. . . DUH! Too late, AND it just jumps after my retreating hand adding scratch injuries to the bite insult. Okay, well say "NO" and leave the room . . . except that it is a fast kitty and by the time I get up from the sofa to leave he is already sprinting right along side me. He doesn't know I'm leaving "him" just thinks I'm moving. Okay, then stop playing with it after it bites you . . .I?m not playing with it! It BITES me when I?m doing NOTHING TO IT. I?m sitting in my chair, he comes up and bites me. I?m sleeping in the bed, he comes up and bites me. Okay, then spray him with water. . . Am I to keep a water pistol on my belt 27/7? Okay, he?s teething give him dry food and plush toys. . . If food and toys were the solution then he wouldn?t STILL BE BITING ME. It bites my fingers, my hands, my arms, my elbows, my toes, my heels, my leg, my thighs, my tits, my ear lobes, my lip, my eyelids, any exposed flesh or my clothes if he can?t get to my skin. He also bite cords, Paper balls, cardboard boxes, the plastic bowl, his food, his fishing lure, his rubber chewing mouse( but not for long, I'm tastier, it seems)anything, he will just walk up to it and put his mouth on it. . . hard! So other than soaking my apartment from constant water spray and locking him into a cage by himself with dry food treats, what am I supposed to do? He bites when he?s playing, he bites when he?s calm and he bites when he?s half asleep. He bites when he?s hungry and when he?s satisfied. He?s not scared now, but I?ve seen the result of that kind of bite, BF is just now recovering from the 4 puncture wounds from when he rescued it. It?s 10 weeks old, stray, been with me a week, very comfortable in the environment, explores, eats and drinks well, runs, jumps and plays, in all ways a health cat, but with an oral fixation. I?ve bought a nursing bottle to keep by the bed to maybe redirect it?s rooting behavior away from my face, but I can?t deal with a biting kitten, who may become a biting cat. I figured to keep it since BF found it, but I will give it away in a heartbeat if this continues to be a problem. If he needs to be around other cats to learn that what he?s doing hurts then he?s gotta go, cause there are not, and won?t be, any other cats in my apt. One is the limit, and I have to pay out the nose to have one. I won?t have one that tortures me. BTW, the kitten does "like" me. I've had cats/pets since I was a child myself, and have raised many rescues. This is my first weird biting issue. I can live with the scratches cause it's so little it has to climb just to get about, even my legs( ouch) but the biting seems not based on anything. I just wonder what the mother and siblings would do if he did this to them. Since I'm not a cat mother, I don't know the appropriate level of correction for this odd type of behavior. I know soft paws, I know clicking, I know even about aggressive biting, but this passive biting just confuses me. I feel like I'm correcting all during his waking hours every 5 to 10 minutes. I do play with him with lots of toys, running and jumping activities, and I groom him with brush and flea comb, so he's used to being handled. BTW, "just give it away" isn't a good answer. I'm hoping folks with experiences with "biting cats" and how they coped will answer, not just folks looking for points. Thanks.
